BOGOTA, September 27, 2016 – The World Bank Group will continue to work with Colombia on supporting equitable development as the basis for sustainable peace, following the country’s historic peace agreement signed yesterday.
“Bringing an end to an armed conflict that has gripped the country for over 50 years and affected the lives of three generations, is more than just good news for Colombians,” said World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, who attended the peace signing ceremony in Cartagena. “An enduring peace will form the solid ground for progress against poverty and for inclusive development, establishing a bulwark against the forces that give rise to violence.”
“Peace and development go hand in hand. A strong and sustainable development agenda is critical for continued success,” he added. “Peace in Colombia provides an opportunity to show the world that it is possible to heal through inclusion and equitable development, and the World Bank Group is here to help.”
As part of the new Country Partnership Framework (CPF) with Colombia, in effect through 2021, the World Bank Group will continue to help Colombia make the most of the multiple development possibilities opening up with peace, and to make progress in ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity.
In particular, the Bank will continue to support the country on territorial development, victims reparations, rural development, land registration, and essential public services in the most marginalized areas, such as the Pacific region.
