AIDSbeat, the annual Toronto law firm Battle of the Bands, takes place this Friday at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex on the CNE grounds.

Event organizers are taking us to the height of the 1970s disco era. The theme of the event is Studio 54, the infamous New York City night club where the glitterati of the day gathered to break the 10 commandments.

Organizer David Palumbo says the Liberty Grand is the perfect venue for this festival of all that is polyester. Guests will be greeted by a massive 6-foot disco ball, and DJ Duarte Da Silva will preside over the show from an elevated pad.

“We’ve got a lot more focus on the DJ than in the past, and obviously the centrepiece is still the battle of the bands.” Mr. Palumbo says. “It will give people a chance to experience one of the most famous clubs of all time.”

The event raises funds for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research.

Judges this year will be Mark Holmes, of Platinum Blonde fame, and myself, of National Post obscurity.

Bring on the bands. My eardrums are ready.
