London, 31 March 2020 – A new COVID-19 airways procedures box will provide our NHS intensive care doctors, anaesthetists and ear nose and throat (ENT) specialists with much needed protection.

Dr. Marion Palmer, senior scientist and innovator at Hogan Lovells, has today launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund a COVID-19 airways procedures box. This innovation was created by Dr. Palmer and Mr Declan Costello FRSC.

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, which means the specialists doing airway procedures on patients, such as intubation, are at risk of contracting and spreading the virus.

The design builds on a Creative Commons design made available online by Dr. Hsien Yung Lai Taiwanese doctor. With the support of the Hogan Lovells Pro Bono and Social Enterprise practice, Marion Palmer and Mr. Costello are in the process of manufacturing prototypes for trials in five hospitals in the UK this week.

Commenting on the campaign, Dr. Marion Palmer said: "Health workers are on the front line against COVID-19. Unfortunately, many of them are working in stressful work environments and are themselves exposed to infection. With this campaign, we hope we will be able to improve their protection from the virus."
