Gowling WLG's intellectual property team expands its trademark offering in China

22 January 2020

Gowling WLG is pleased to announce the expansion of its Intellectual Property (IP) offering in China - with a recently approved direct trademark filing licence. The recent change in law means that we are amongst the first wholly owned foreign offices who have the ability to file trademarks directly without the use of a local firm.

The growth of the practice will enable the firm to better serve its global clientele in one of the world's fastest-growing - and most challenging - IP markets.

"The direct filing licence is crucial as we can now act for our clients throughout the IP journey without having to rely on external local firms", said Dr Jian Xu, Beijing office Managing Director. "So far, the licence has only been approved for a few foreign firms, meaning that we are at the forefront of the trademarks market and able to give our clients the added benefit of only using one firm throughout the process".

With its additional capabilities in China, Gowling WLG's globally recognised IP team is strategically positioned to advise international clients across an arc of challenging jurisdictions: Russia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and China.

Gowling WLG's global IP team holds unmatched expertise in patents, trademarks, brands, designs, advertising, copyright and IP litigation. With offices in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, the UAE, China and Singapore and an extensive network of international IP practitioners, the firm has been representing the world's largest brand owners for more than 125 years.
