Morrison & Foerster counsel Michael V. Dobson discusses Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska’s lawsuit against the U.S. Treasury Department, which alleges the sanctions against him are illegal and have cost him $7.5 billion in the Radio Free Europe article entitled, “Russia's Deripaska Files Suit Against U.S. Sanctions, Claims Loss Of $7.5 Billion.” Deripaska, a powerful tycoon with close ties to the Kremlin, names the Treasury, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and Andrea Gacki, who leads the Treasury's sanctions unit, in his suit.
Dobson called the suit an "annoyance claim" that is unlikely to be successful. He said, "Ultimately I don't really think this case is going to go far.”
