International law firm Pinsent Masons has appointed one of the City's most pre-eminent practitioners in structured finance, securitisation and other structured finance transactions.

Ian Falconer was formerly a Partner at Freshfields where, during a period of 30 years, he played a pivotal role in the development of the firm's structured finance business in London (which he headed between 1993 and 2001) and Paris, and the European securitisation market more generally. He joins Pinsent Masons as Senior Consultant.

His experience covers a range of public and private transactions, commencing with the very first securitisation transactions in the UK market.

Asset classes covered by Ian have included residential mortgages, auto hire purchase contracts, lease and dealer floor plans, consumer loans (secured and unsecured), loans to SMEs, credit cards and student loans, including non-performing and distressed assets, and specialised assets such as commodity trade receivables and inventories and shipping freight receivables, as well as whole business corporate debt platforms.

Edward Sunderland, Head of Structured Finance at Pinsent Masons, says:

"As might be expected of a practitioner of Ian's experience and reputation, his clients and relationships within the structured finance market are peerless. Pinsent Masons' structured finance practice continues to offer clients innovative propositions combined with legal excellence and Ian's appointment adds greater strength and depth to our team."

Martin Bishop, Head of Banking and Restructuring at Pinsent Masons, added:

“We are very pleased that a practitioner of Ian’s calibre has chosen to join Pinsent Masons.  It is a real vote of confidence in the progression we have made and our plan to grow our structured finance practice.  I know Ian is particularly excited about taking forward the innovative and tech-led methodologies we employ in the securitisation market.”

Pinsent Masons has advised on a number of major mandates recently, including advising the originator on a consumer debt NPL securitisation, the lead arrangers on a UK based vehicle lease securitisation and the lead manager on the HMP Thameside bond issue.
