Historic law firm Thomson Snell & Passmore has appointed its first female chief executive.

Sarah Henwood will lead the company as it prepares to celebrate its milestone 450th year in business in 2020.

She was previously director of marketing and business development at Shearman & Sterling, based in its Hong Kong office.

During her career Henwood has held roles at Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters. She was also chief executive of the Outward Bound Trust.

"I look forward to embracing the new challenges ahead as I step into the role of chief executive of the oldest law firm in operation in the world," Henwood said.

"With Thomson Snell & Passmore’s 450th anniversary approaching, I will be working closely with the board, partners and other members of the firm, to build on the firm’s rich heritage and performance to ensure continued growth and success, especially as we draw closer to celebrating an important milestone."

James Partridge, senior partner at Thomson Snell & Passmore, who leads the firm’s management board, added: "On behalf of the entire firm, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to Sarah.

"With her extensive commercial experience commercial acumen and her knowledge in business development, we have no doubt that the firm will continue to flourish under her guidance as we cement our place as a leading South East law firm with our new office and continued financial growth."
