Music Modernization Act Clears Senate Panel

Updated Music-Copyright Law Clears Senate Panel
– Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal pointed to an analysis by Manatt’s Jordan Bromley, a partner in the firm’s music practice, in an article on the latest updates to the Music Modernization Act.

The publication noted that the Music Modernization Act, which updates copyright law for the digital age, has been passed by the House and has cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee, but has not yet been scheduled for a full Senate vote. The legislation aims to create a body to administer royalties owed to songwriters by music-streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.

“Royalties collected by music publishers account for a small chunk of what music services typically pay out—roughly 6 cents to 7 cents per dollar of revenue, according to analysis by music lawyer Jordan Bromley,” the publication explained.
