Hunton & Williams is proud to act as legal services provider for ChemoCars, a nonprofit offering patients free rides to and from chemotherapy treatments via Uber and Lyft. Since February 2017, Hunton has served as outside general counsel to ChemoCars and provided various pro bono legal services, including drafting its bylaws and conflict of interest policy, guiding the organization through the process of obtaining its 501(c)(3) certification (currently pending), and providing intellectual property advice.

ChemoCars was started in March 2017 by long-standing firm client Zach Bolster, who was a vice president at a successful hedge fund. It was during this time that his mother, Gloria, was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. During the course of her treatment, the Bolster family became keenly aware that many cancer patients didn’t have friends or family available to help with transportation to chemotherapy or radiation treatments. This forced patients to drive themselves, which can be dangerous, or even miss treatments altogether. Following Gloria Bolster’s death in December 2016, Zach launched ChemoCars in her memory and to help solve this problem. Zach’s story was recently featured in People Magazine, CBS This Morning, and CBS Evening News.

Hunton & Williams partners Steven H. Becker, Robert J. Hahn and Alexander G. McGeoch lead  the pro bono partnership with ChemoCars. “When Zach called about his idea, we were very excited about the opportunity to play a role in providing relief and stability to those suffering from cancer,” Becker says.  “I was shocked by the magnitude of the problem and how many patients were either driving themselves to treatment, or were unable to get to treatment at all. I still remember the difficulty in transporting my mother to infusion sessions, as my mother succumbed to cancer many years ago.”

Hunton & Williams is proud of its community service and leadership among law firms in the United States, where the firm’s tradition of pro bono service is well recognized. During the last eight fiscal years, 100 percent of Hunton & Williams full-time US lawyers participated in pro bono projects. At the end of the firm’s fiscal year on March 31, 2017, the firm had donated more than 40,000 pro bono hours to underserved communities. This represents more than 3 percent of the firm’s gross billable hours and commemorates 22 continuous years of meeting or exceeding the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge of donating at least 3 percent of the firm’s annual billable hours to pro bono service.
