From the Independent Business Blogs: 9/15/21

Independent business blogs are blogs that aren’t supported by an organization like a magazine, newspaper, company, or business school. Those people provide lots of great content, but they don’t need any additional exposure. In this post, every week, I bring you posts of quality from excellent bloggers that don’t get as much publicity.

This week, I’m pointing you to posts by LaRae Quy, Steve Keating, Karin Hurt, Kevin Eikenberry, and Sharlyn Lauby.

From LaRae Quy: The Most Common Well-Being Advice That Doesn’t Work

“Well-being is about becoming a better person, learning from our failures, and growing from our experiences. Here is the most common well-being advice that doesn’t work:”

From Steve Keating: If You Just Don’t Care Then You Just Can’t Lead

“A leader who is missing even a few of those characteristics, so long as integrity is present, can still lead. They will have some deficiencies but those can be overcome by strengths in other characteristics. But there is another characteristic of Authentic Leadership that doesn’t get the ‘ink’ that it should. That characteristic is a caring heart.”

From Karin Hurt: How to Build a Better Network of Peer Relationships

“When it comes to building a network of strategic advisors, it’s natural to look to people with more position power, access, and influence as your primary go-to’s. Yes, you want a productive relationship with your boss, a mentor who will challenge you, and—if you’re really lucky—a genuine sponsor opening doors. But don’t overlook the importance of a network of strong peer relationships.”

From Kevin Eikenberry: Avoiding Cliques on Your Hybrid Team

“Put people in groups and cliques will naturally form.  While they don’t have to be negative, often they are seen as such, especially by those on the outside looking in.  As we move to a new future of work leaders must be aware of cliques on hybrid teams, so the negative impacts can be avoided.”

From Sharlyn Lauby: How to Attend a Virtual Conference

“I’ve attended a couple of virtual conferences recently and decided to document my approach. This was a good exercise for me and my professional development. I hope you find my takeaways valuable as well.”

How I Select Posts for this Midweek Review

The five posts I select to share in my Midweek Review of the Independent Business Blogs are picked from a regular review of about sixty blogs I check daily and an additional twenty-five or so that I check occasionally. Here’s how I select the posts you see in this review.

They must be published within the previous week.

They must support the purpose of the blog: to help leaders at all levels do a better job and lead a better life.

They must be from an independent business blog.

As a general rule, I only select posts that stand on their own, no selections from a series.

Also as a general rule, I do not select posts that are either a book review or a book report.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above.

Here, on Three Star Leadership, I post things that will help a boss at any level do a better job and live a better life. And, at my blog for part-time business book authors, I share tools and insights to help you write and publish a book you’ll be proud of.

The 347 tips in my ebook can help you Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time.
