Wolters Kluwer Legal & Regulatory U.S. Vice President and General Manager of Legal Markets and Innovation Dean Sonderegger will lead two sessions on legal technology trends at the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Annual Meeting and Conference in Baltimore, Maryland from July 14-17.

With more than two decades of experience at the cutting edge of technology across industries, Sonderegger will explore technology’s impacts on the practice of law, and how law firms can utilize these tools to improve accuracy and efficiency across their business. “The legal tech boom has provided law firms with an endless variety of options – but there is no one-size-fits-all solution for every firm,” said Sonderegger. “It is crucial for legal professionals to understand how different solutions can not only add value for the firm’s clients, but also how they can be leveraged in a way that benefits the firm fully.”

In his first session, entitled “Monetizing Your Law Firm’s DMS,” Sonderegger will discuss the value of a law firm’s document management system (DMS), and ways that law firms can adopt machine learning to leverage the rich set of contracts stored in the DMS. The session will take place on Sunday, July 15 at 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM in BCC Room 323.

During this session, participants will gain insight on:

  • The use cases for machine learning solutions on document management systems (DMS);
  • Tech models that a law firm can adopt in order to leverage this technology, and the benefits and drawbacks of each; and
  • How artificial intelligence works within a law firm’s DMS and how it can be applied to benefit the firm.

The second session, “Today’s Law Firm Library: Navigating Traditional Research and New Technologies,” will take place on Monday, July 16 from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM in BCC Room 323. Moderated by Sonderegger, the session will explore emerging technologies that can be used to predict regulatory outcomes and manage challenges associated with changes to the law over time. Expert panelists participating in the discussion will include Oliver R. Goodenough, Professor of Law at Vermont Law School and Executive Director of its Center for Legal Innovation; and Russell Switzer, Senior Tax Research Analyst at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP.

The session will cover:

  • What new technologies are impacting and changing legal research;
  • Use cases within legal tech for artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing, and machine learning; and
  • The benefits of bringing predictive analytics to legal research within a firm and determine practice areas where AI may be under-utilized.

With more than two decades of experience at the cutting edge of technology across industries, Dean Sonderegger directs the Legal Markets Group of Wolters Kluwer Legal and Regulatory U.S.  He currently authors a monthly column for Above the Law exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and the practice of law.

Held in Baltimore, Maryland, the AALL Annual Meeting and Conference celebrates innovation and leadership within the legal profession. As the largest gathering of law librarians in the country, AALL brings together legal information experts of all backgrounds for the advancement of legal information and information policy.
