We published our first KMWorld Trend-Setting Products list nearly a decade-and-a-half ago because we wanted to bring some clarity to the sometimes elusive knowledge management needs of our subscribers. As we do with our KMWorld 100 Companies That Matter list, we established a judging panel of colleagues, market and technology analysts, KM theoreticians and practitioners, customers and a select few savvy users in a variety of disciplines to identify products that fulfill the ultimate goal of knowledge management—delivering the right information to the right people at the right time.
Throughout the yearlong collaborative judging process, we looked at more than 200 vendors, whose combined product lineups include more than 1,000 separate offerings. Although the standards we set for inclusion on any of KMWorld’s lists are high, we didn’t develop a formal, rigid set of criteria that needed to be met for inclusion on this year’s. As in years past, though, we all agreed that usability, flexibility, adoption rate and total cost of ownership were valuable components for inclusion. Our committee further agreed that each company/product listed holds the promise for the marketplace—even if the marketplace has yet to realize it.
