A New Generation of Female General Counsel

With all that’s going on in private practice right now, it’s easy to ignore the big shifts happening within corporate legal departments. Pay attention, and what we’re witnessing is a changing of the guard. In short: a growing generation of female legal leaders.

Earlier this month, luxury goods giant LVMH appointed Caroline Bergeron Plantefève, as general counsel – a role that had been occupied by incumbent Bernard Kuhn, for three decades. It was the first in a month of big in-house changes, as corporate leadership looks increasingly to women to lead their monied legal departments.

And last week, Swiss banking major UBS replaced Markus Diethelm - who steps down after 13 years in the role – with Rio Tinto chief legal officer Barbara Levi.
