Clifford Chance advises easyJet on its plans to offset its carbon emissions from fuel for every flight

International law firm Clifford Chance is advising easyJet on its commitment to be the first major airline to offset carbon emissions from fuel used on all of its domestic and international flights from 19 November 2019.

The legal aspects of the project were led by easyJet's Group General Counsel, Maaike de Bie, and easyJet's Head of Commercial Legal, Jonathan Levy supported by legal adviser, Lewis Bates, working together with a Clifford Chance team led by Nigel Howorth and supported by Kirsty Souter with input from Melissa Fogarty and Daud Khan (Corporate), Vanessa Marsland and Leigh Smith (IP) and Susan Poffley (Litigation). Clifford Chance has worked with easyJet for several years, including on the acquisition of part of Air Berlin's operations at Tegel Airport.

Nigel Howorth, Environment Partner at Clifford Chance said, "We are delighted to advise easyJet on this ground-breaking initiative. Climate concerns are driving businesses across all sectors to take responsibility for their environmental impacts, and carbon offsetting will be an important mechanism, particularly in the aviation sector, to enhance corporate sustainability during the transition to a low carbon economy."

Clifford Chance's Environment Group is committed to assisting clients with the challenges of climate change and sustainability against the background of ever-stricter national, European and international environmental regulation. The team brings real expertise, technical understanding and entrepreneurial thinking to this complex and rapidly changing area of law.
