Clifford Chance partners KLRCA for its Summer Academy programme on International Investment Law

Leading international law firm Clifford Chance is proud to be the official partner for the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration’s (KLRCA) Summer Academy on International Investment Law and Dispute Settlement (Academy), which started its programme today.

The KLRCA is an international organisation established to promote and conduct international arbitration in the Asia Pacific region in line with the work of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). Following the success of its first International Investment Arbitration Conference – the largest in Asia, it organised the first KLRCA Summer Academy on International Investment Law and Dispute Settlement.

Running till 29 July 2016, the Academy is designed for government officials, lawyers, specialists, practitioners, professors, researchers and students. It aims to empower participants with the essential theoretical and practical skills to understand and deal with investment disputes under bilateral and multilateral investment treaties. Participants will engage in courses, seminars, and workshops led by leading practitioners and experts from around the world, and will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and exchange ideas with experts and fellow participants working in the same field.

The launch of the Summer Academy comes on the back of several developments in the area of international law. Aside from the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) recently releasing its sixth edition of its SIAC Rules 2016, taking effect on 1 August 2016, international events such as Brexit and the Hague ruling over the South China Sea issue create an urgency for a deeper understanding of international investment law and dispute settlement.

“With the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, an integrated marketplace will provide significant opportunity for cross-border trade and investment. With the use of international arbitration as a dispute resolution mechanism for transnational disputes increasing in popularity in ASEAN, it is essential that not only lawyers, but also government officials, practitioners and specialists, are equipped with the skills to deal with such disputes,” said Nish Shetty, ‎Partner & Head of International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution (SEA) at Clifford Chance. “The KLRCA’s Academy provides such a platform, and Clifford Chance is delighted to partner with KLRCA in this endeavour.”

Aside from partnering with KLRCA, Clifford Chance had previously launched its own Clifford Chance Academy in Singapore last year, to provide high quality technical legal and advanced business skills training to more than 570 of its own lawyers in the Asia Pacific region.
