Fortress Investment Group’s VLSI Technology LLC wrapped up its six-day patent infringement trial against Intel Corp. with a bold demand: more than $2 billion in damages for the infringement of two semiconductor-related patents.

At least, that appeared to be the number. As throughout the trial, Irell & Manella partner Morgan Chu didn’t say it out loud but showed the jury figures on closed-circuit monitors. Intel’s Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr attorneys said it was “literally billions of dollars” and told jurors that “no one has ever paid remotely the type of money VLSI is seeking for these two patents.”
