The U.S. Supreme Court said oral arguments in October at the start of the new term will be conducted by telephone, a scheme the justices set in place just months ago as the coronavirus pandemic shuttered courts around the country.

The court in May held a series of telephonic arguments in major cases, and the justices were permitted to ask questions based on seniority. Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. was the keeper of the clock, occasionally telling his colleagues to “wrap up.”
