Will it live or die?
I thought this post by Mat Rotenberg was fascinating - the hows and whys of selling his company, Dashboard Legal, to a big company, Bloomberg. There is clearly passion in the man that made Dashboard Legal what it was prior to the sell. What it doesn't say is whether or not the big company, any big company can move forward with that same passion. Now while "[blank] is where good software goes to die," is a phrased repeatedly used to describe some of Bloomberg's competition and their purchases of great software from passionate little companies, I have never heard it applied to them. Kudos to Mat and I guess we'll see whether the phrase fits Bloomberg as well. Read more at LawSites: Guest Post: My Thoughts One Week After Selling My Legaltech Company to Bloomberg

The Beehive State
As of May 1, 2024, Senate Bill 149 (Artificial Intelligence Policy Act) makes the state of Utah unique. The post notes, "The Utah AI Act mandates specific disclosure guidelines for entities deploying generative AI technologies in interactions with consumers, particularly in regulated professions such as healthcare and legal services." I like the fact that Utah is putting some kin into the game and not just issuing regulations. "The AI Learning Laboratory, a key initiative under the newly formed AI Office, will work on evaluating AI technologies' risks and benefits, providing an experimental ground for companies to test AI solutions under regulatory oversight."

A user by any other name...
Taylor Majewski writes, "People have been called 'users' for a long time; it's a practical shorthand enforced by executives, founders, operators, engineers, and investors ad infinitum. Often, it is the right word to describe people who use software: a user is more than just a customer or a consumer." I know I get asked this all the time and I've used this term forever. Taylor goes into the history and argue users aren't simply another component in the computer system, but is willing to admit that we aren't very likely to get rid of the term anytime soon. So my question to all you pinions is what do you call your users if you don't use that term? I will say it's still better term then "nonlawyer." Be sure to read more at MIT Technology Review: It's time to retire the term "user"
