The AmLaw Rankings: Growth Slowing Even at Elite Law Firms

Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz broke new ground this year with profits per partner surging 20 percent to $6.6 million, the first firm ever to surpass the $6 million mark.

That’s the good news from this year’s American Lawyer rankings. The bad news is that law firms continued to take a drubbing.

“We haven’t seen such small gains since the Great Recession,” said Kim Kleman, editor-in-chief of The American Lawyer.

“Even firms at the top of the list didn’t have the year they hoped for,” Kleman added, pointing to a slow-down in dealmaking and exchange rates as proximate causes.
