The government of the United Kingdom announced Monday that the English Premier League, the world’s richest confederation of soccer teams, may resume its season June 1 amid heavy restrictions because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“Cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact,” will be allowed, the government announced in its plan to ease lockdown restrictions. Fans will not be allowed back into stadiums until “significantly later,” the document said.
