UMaine seeks final applications for master food preservation

FALMOUTH, Maine (AP) — The University of Maine is looking for residents who are interested in becoming masters at food preservation, which could be a useful skill during the coronavirus pandemic.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension is accepting applications for the Master Food Preserver program until May 1. The ten-session course is expected to take place in Falmouth and Brunswick.

The course is open to anyone 21 years old or older. It will cover subjects including prevention of food-borne illness, food storage and safety and canning basics. The sessions run through the summer.

The extension said “participants volunteer in their communities to provide research-based food preservation information from Extension and the U.S. Department of Agriculture” after completing the program.
