With fewer eyes on kids, child abuse reports plummet in Montgomery County

Social workers in Montgomery County are receiving far fewer allegations of child abuse during the covid-19 shutdown — a trend that hardly signals kids aren’t being hurt, but rather that their injuries aren’t being seen.

“We are very concerned about what we don’t know about,” said Lisa Merkin, head of Child Welfare Services for the county.
