At a time when some adversaries are choosing to help each other address a public-health catastrophe that knows no political or national boundaries, the United States and Iran seem intent on continuing to goad one another toward confrontation.

Both countries were unprepared to manage the coronavirus outbreak and are suffering as a result. And yet, as the virus continues to kill far too many citizens of both nations, the relationship between Tehran and Washington has returned to its normal levels of vitriol.
