A committee has been formed to conduct factory inspections to ensure their implementation of the governments measures to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19), said Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea.

The inspections are to take place to ensure compliance with the measures to ensure worker safety in factories and production continuity during this delicate stage.

On Monday, Gamea inspected factories producing food products, medical supplies, ready-made clothes and sports products in Obour, to the east of Cairo. The inspection is a follow up on the production processes and to determine the extent of the factories commitment to preventive and precautionary measures against the coronavirus.

The minister added that the government is currently implementing a comprehensive plan to support the industrial sector against the fallout from the virus.

She noted that the government’s efforts include a number of measures and procedures to ensure production continues at the same pace as before. At the same time, the health and safety of workers in factories would not be compromised.

Gamea said that her ministry is following up on workplace sterilisation and disinfection procedures at private sector factories. She stressed the importance of the private sectors commitment to ensuring no workers are laid off and not decreasing workers wages.

The ministry has conducted an inventory of food and pharmaceutical industry factories operating using the shifts system to ensure they continue to work at full capacity. It is also providing additional funding for projects affected by the coronavirus, ensuring there are no production obstacles.
