The Stars Align

Gary John Bishop self-published the self-help title Unfu*k Yourself in 2016; it sold 24K print copies, per BookScan, and was picked up by HarperOne, which rereleased the book in 2017. Print unit sales hummed along, a few thousand a week, helped by media attention from outlets including Bustle, Women’s Health, and Refinery29, as well as a recent moms/dads/grads marketing push. Almost a year after its publication, the book cracks our bestseller list, landing at #20 in hardcover nonfiction. HarperCollins is no stranger to NSFW self-help titles; it also publishes Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.

Movie Watch

2012’s The Darkest Minds launched Alexandra Bracken’s futuristic YA series about a group of kids targeted for their extraordinary abilities. The film adaptation, starring Amandla Stenberg, opens August 3; the tie-in edition debuts in children’s frontlist fiction at #21. A sequel to the original trilogy, set five years after the events of the third novel, pubs July 31.
