Patrick Byrnes and Matthew Kalas Provide Commentary on FAA-Commissioned Drone Risk Assessment Report in Unmanned Aerial

June 11, 2018

Attorneys Patrick Byrnes and Matthew Kalas, both members of Locke Lord’s Aviation & Defense group based in Chicago, commented on a new report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which was sponsored by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The report finds that introducing drone operations into the nation’s airspace can provide substantial benefits to society. Byrnes calls the new report “a very welcome development,” for it “echoes what many in the industry have been saying for years. He also said, “This study was sponsored by the FAA, and hopefully the FAA will take its findings to heart as it moves forward in this important area.” Also commenting on the report Kalas said, in part, “The new FAA-funded report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine urging a probabilistic, risk-based assessment with strong words suggesting a top-down change in mindset at the FAA may be more pabulum than real food for thought.”
