Paul Smith, partner, Harneys

Paul Smith has joined Harneys from DLA Piper’s London office, where he was a partner in the firm’s litigation and regulatory group. He has more than 15 years of legal practice, specializing in complex international commercial disputes.

In addition, Mr. Smith has been extensively involved in arbitration, mediation and regulatory investigations, with a particular focus on the banking and financial services sector. Before working at DLA Piper, he spent nearly five years with Herbert Smith Freehills in Tokyo, and he spent the first five years of his career with Slaughter and May in London.

Harneys also appointed Thomas Gray as a senior associate in the firm’s banking and finance department in Cayman.

Mr. Gray previously worked at Deutsche Bank in New York, where he served as senior regulatory adviser for six years, as well as the bank’s London office and in private practice for the law firms Clifford Chance and Freshfields.

Mr. Gray’s area of expertise is structured finance, including complex securitizations and CLOs, synthetic CLOs and warehouse facilities. He has also authored or co-authored numerous policy documents on regulatory matters affecting the industry including the European Capital Requirement Regulations and the Capital Requirement Directive IV, the Dodd-Frank Act, the U.S. Basel III capital framework, and the recently updated international banking standards referred to as “Basel IV.”
