Dick Synder, former publishing honcho, lists NYC mansion for $17M

A sprawling Upper East Side mansion owned by publishing giant Richard “Dick” Synder, 88, has hit the market for $17 million — down from its original $26 million asking price back in 2012.

The eight-story, eight-bedroom townhouse at 120 E. 78th St. comes with eight fireplaces and more than 10,000 square feet.

Snyder was the former president, CEO and chairman of Simon & Schuster. The home was designed by architects Delano & Aldrich, who created some of the city’s key landmarks, like the Knickerbocker Club, the Colony Club, the Union Club and schools like Chapin and St. Bernard’s.

It was built in 1930 by banker Henry Winthrop, and its original details — including French paneling, hardwood floors and carved marble mantels — have been restored.

Snyder bought the home for $4.91 million in 1996, according to property records.

The facade of the townhouse features a curved marble staircase along with an iron fence, while the upper floors are red brick trimmed in limestone. The home also includes a large living room and dining room, a wood-paneled library, as well as an eat-in chef’s kitchen, a 600 bottle wine cellar and a gym with a Pilates studio and a massage room.

The outdoor space includes a garden and three terraces including one on the roof. The home is anchored by a staircase “capped” by a large skylight. There’s also an elevator.

The listing broker is Serena Boardman of Sotheby’s International Realty.
