Location: Marietta, Georgia

Lovers of midcentury modern style find joy in a home’s butterfly roof, post-and-beam construction, and large glass windows. But over the decades, the interiors of some stunning houses are updated without thought, ripping out original bathrooms and kitchens and replacing them with more contemporary elements.

That’s not the case with this four-bedroom, three-bath Eichler-inspired home about 45 minutes northwest of Atlanta. Sitting on the top of a hill on a one acre lot in Whitlock Heights, the house maintains most of its original features. The large and open living room area boasts soaring tongue and groove ceilings with a massive crab orchard stacked stone fireplace. East facing clerestory windows and a glassed sunroom extends the length of the rear of the home to let in light, contrasting with the warm wood-paneled interiors.

A kitchen off of the living room features the home’s original Thermador ovens and an opening into the communal spaces. Elsewhere, a long hallway with built-in bookshelves leads to the four bedrooms, all with original wood detailing. The three bathrooms still have the tile and vintage brass fixtures from 1954, and even in the bedrooms and bathrooms, large windows maintain an airy feel.

The architect is unknown; according to listing agent William Bedgood the home was built in 1954 by an engineer who moved to Marietta from California to work for Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin). The current owners bought the home in 1980 from the original owners and haven’t altered the house much.

Ready to be the third owner of this 1954 gem? 479 South Woodland Drive is on sale now for $535,000.
