Uber announced 100 lay offs this week.
"Uber has laid off 100 self-driving car operators, the majority of whom were based in Pittsburgh, in the wake of a fatal pedestrian crash in Arizona earlier this year," reports Courtney Linder.
While Linder discusses the implications for the company as well as the employment futures of the laid off employees, also covered is the impact of the lay offs on the city of Pittsburgh's role in the emerging self-driving car industry.
"The self-driving vehicle industry in Pittsburgh is thriving and adding jobs every day," said Tim McNulty, communications director for Mayor Bill Peduto's office in an email cited by Linder. "Internal personnel decisions by one company or another does not impede that, or impact the industry's long-term growth."
