One of Portland’s most famous houses has come on the market, and it’s no surprise why it had been so ballyhooed. Sponsored by The Oregonian, the 1927 model home was designed, built, and furnished under the supervision of the paper’s domestic science editor and conceived as an effort to promote the post-World War I real estate economy.

Every Sunday, and sometimes even more often than that, Portland’s daily newspaper would feature the progress of the English Tudor’s construction on the front page—above-the-fold. When it finally opened its doors to the public, the Terwilliger Heights house drew up to 35,000 visitors.

Measuring 4,731 square feet, the residence still boasts many original details today, including “labor-intensive” millwork, hardwood floors with black walnut inlay, and a front door made with a single piece of gum wood. The four-bedroom-three-bath enjoys many updates as well, including a new kitchen and an overall refresh that makes it a joy to behold.

Located at 1059 SW Westwood Drive on a third of an acre just ten minutes from downtown, it’s on the market for the first time in nearly half a century and offered at just under $1.5 million. Have a look.
