Syracuse schools plan to reopen with armed, retired police at K-8, middle schools: The Syracuse school district will reopen this fall with 40 new school security officers across the district and up to 20 armed, retired police officers. The retired police officers will be at the middle and K-8 schools, which previously did not have police officers on site. The ramped up security is partly in response to an incident this past year when an eighth grader brought a gun to Ed Smith, a K-8 school in the district that serves 20,000 students.

Stefanik, Tenney lash out over Mar-A-Lago search: Republican lawmakers are lashing out after the FBI searched former President Donald Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago as part of an investigation into whether he took classified documents from the White House to his Florida estate. Upstate New York congressional Reps. Elise Stefanik and Claudia Tenney both called the search an “abuse of power” and accused the FBI and the Department of Justice of being politically weaponized.

County to install opioid overdose rescue kits in libraries, other public places: A life-saving medication that reverses opioid overdoses will be available for free in dispensers Onondaga County plans to install on the walls of some public libraries and other locations where overdoses may occur. The county also plans to open a syringe exchange to supply people who inject drugs with new, clean needles. The actions are part of the county’s response to the opioid overdose epidemic.

WHO MADE THE C-NS “MOUNT RUSHMORE”? Syracuse.com’s Mount Rushmore Project is an endeavor that identifies the four best boys and girls athletes in the history of selected Section III schools. Cicero-North Syracuse is one of the programs we started with this summer, along with Skaneateles, Nottingham and Fayetteville-Manlius. It was a tough task to narrow the nominations down, but we did. Meet the four male and four female athletes that were chosen from C-NS.

Defense dominates in SU football’s first practice in pads: Syracuse football’s defense picked off Garrett Shrader twice during a short period of 11-on-11 work at Tuesday’s practice, the first fully padded practice of the fall. “The defense definitely won the day today,” coach Dino Babers said.
