Governor Cuomo Wants to Spend $10 Million More on Census Promotion

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is outlining his spending plans for the fiscal year that begins April 1, including dealing with a $6-billion deficit but is proposing spending more to make sure New York is accurately counted in this year’s census. 

The Governor January 20 announced plans to spend $10 million more, in addition to the $60 million already budgeted for census participation.

In a call with reporters, the Democrat announced upcoming conferences with a new, star-studded census council to raise awareness around the state about the importance of everyone participating in the count.

Cuomo says the Census Council will be co-chaired by Martin Luther King III, actress Lucy Liu and Broadway star and musician Lin-Manuel Miranda. 

The Governor said he wanted everyone is be assured that their information will be kept confidential and there will be no repercussions based on religion, ethnicity, stereotypes or fears linked to immigration status.

This will be the first time the census can be completed online and the Governor announced a new Census information web page in 103 languages.
