SCHENECTADY On Monday, America will be celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

His legacy was celebrated in Schenectady County on Sunday with the 34th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

Hosted by the county’s Human Rights Commission, the event was held at Schenectady County Community College.

“We’re living in Dr. King’s dream. Dr. King had a dream that one day we won’t be judged by the color of our skin but our character instead. What you see today is Dr. King’s dream, incorporating youth, women, men, boys, and girls and also all nationalities and religions from all over coming here to celebrate his legacy,” said Ang Morris, Executive Director of Schenectady County Humans Rights Commission.

Sunday’s event was not only a celebration of Dr. King’s life, but also a reminder that our country needs to continue to build on it. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Time to Act; Now More Than Ever.”

“Women’s rights are under attack. We have anti-Semitism that has risen, racism, bigotry and hatred and also nasty partisan politics that’s happening in Washington, so it employs all of us to get involved with a sense of urgency,” said Morris.

The event hosted Congressman Anthony Delgado (CD-19) as its keynote speaker.

“We’re living in some pretty divided times right now, very partisan, hate is on the rise, I can’t think of a better time to truly reflect upon the legacy of Dr. King,” said Delgado.

Delgado explained that America’s leaders need not forget Dr. King’s message – that we are all created equal and only love can drive out hate.

“It’s important to lead with love. I can’t stress enough how much of the legacy of Dr. King informs the way I operate. I think it is of utmost importance that any leader, and particularly when we’re trying to bring people together, leads with love and compassion in their heart and not with hate,” said Delgado.
