Malliotakis Statement on LatinoJustice Appeal of Noncitizen Voting

March 22, 2024

(NEW YORK, NY) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today released the following statement regarding LatinoJustice filing a notice to appeal last month's decision by the Appellate Court to strike down down noncitizen voting in New York City elections:

"LatinoJustice's notice of appeal attempting to overturn rulings that declared noncitizen voting unconstitutional by both the New York State Supreme Court and Appellate Court is a slap in the face to New Yorkers and legal immigrants who followed our rules, became U.S. citizens, and earned their right to vote in our elections. There is nothing more important than preserving the integrity of our election system and this unconstitutional law that has been struck down in two consecutive wins only diminished the voices of our citizenry. I urge the City to not waste more taxpayer money to join this appeal and instead focus on the needs of hardworking New Yorkers who are facing so many quality of life and public safety issues."

Malliotakis and her mother, a Cuban refugee and legal U.S. Citizen, were plaintiffs in the lawsuit that got the 2022 law struck down.
