Eric Trump squared off on Twitter with Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, claiming that “our great city has gone to shit” under de Blasio’s leadership.
The son of President Donald Trump fired off a series of tweets Monday evening in response to a press conference de Blasio held in the lobby of NYC’s Trump Tower earlier in the day. The mayor intended to tout his NYC Green New Deal and attacked Trump for being a major source of the emissions he aims to eliminate. “The fact that the Mayor of a major city would attack an iconic organization (which employs thousands of hardworking New York taxpayers) for his own political gain is an abuse of power, unethical and simply counterintuitive,” Trump tweeted.

Trump went on to accuse de Blasio of failing to support businesses, claiming that was the reason people were choosing to leave the city.

Trump then extended an offer, saying that he would be happy to sit down with de Blasio and talk policy any time. “But forcing a pop-up press conference in our lobby is simply childish,” he added.

De Blasio responded, again attacking the Trump organization and accusing the president of tax evasion. “Spare me,” he tweeted. “You and your dad have spent decades evading taxes and stiffing your workers.”

According to the most recent census data, Trump may be right about people leaving New York. Although the major population losses are focused upstate, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Nassau and Westchester Counties all saw losses between 2017 and 2018 as well. The state’s cumulative loss is such that, if it continues, New York could lose two Congressional seats by 2022.
