‘He should be worried’: Trump now in Nixon territory, says Senate Democrat

.

Sen. Chris Murphy said Sunday that President Trump’s legal situation is similar to that of President Richard Nixon just before his 1974 resignation.

“We certainly have moved into a new phase. The president has now stepped into the territory that ultimately led to President Nixon resigning the office. President Nixon was an unindicted co-conspirator,” the Connecticut Democrat said on ABC’s “This Week.”

A sentencing memo filed by prosecutors Friday against former Trump attorney Michael Cohen said he violated campaign finance law “in coordination with and at the direction of” Trump when paying off women alleging affairs during the 2016 campaign.

Trump argued that Cohen pleaded guilty to a non-crime, and that the payments were not directly linked to the campaign. But even some Trump allies are worried about the strong language of prosecutors.

“This investigation is now starting to put the president in serious legal crosshairs,” Murphy said. “He should be worried, and the whole country should be worried. Nobody is rooting for the president to go down in this manner. This isn’t good for democracy. But this investigation may, ultimately, lead to congress taking action. “
