Retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan will appear at a fundraiser for North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik today in Saratoga Springs.

The noontime luncheon is $250 per person, according to an invitation by the Saratoga County Republican party. VIPs can pay $1,000 for a photo opp with the politicians. The location of the event is provided only to guests. The event is closed to the press.

According to USA Today, Ryan’s visit kicks off a dash through a dozen states to help bolster what the paper calls 25 “vulnerable” GOP candidates in the upcoming mid-term elections. The newspaper says Ryan’s team has chosen the districts because they’re “competitive” and because he hasn’t visited them yet.

Most political observers have seen Stefanik as a relatively safe candidate for months. But that’s been changing slightly more recently. Cook Political Report, for example, moved the 21st Congressional district from “solid Republican” to “likely Republican.”

Ryan could also be visiting Stefanik’s district for another reason – Stefanik is a protégé. Stefanik worked for Ryan as his director for debate preparation when he ran for vice-president in 2012.

Stefanik is facing a challenge from St. Lawrence County Democrat Tedra Coibb and Green party candidate Lynn Kahn.
