Six people 19-and under-shot. Two of them now dead. All in the last five weeks in the city of Syracuse.

Now the Governor of New York State says as a leader and a parent, his office has to step in.

"The recklessness of this type of violence and the unnecessary loss of life and children, literally, is pain-staking," explained Governor Andrew Cuomo (D).

Governor Cuomo says he will work to end the bloodshed in two ways-starting with more officers in the city.

"Deploying more State Police to work in cooperation with the Syracuse Police because more police do make a difference, there is a deterrent effect to having more police," said Governor Cuomo.

He's also going to put state dollars into programs already working to fight crime and keep kids safe.

The Governor says he'll look to Mayor Ben Walsh and community leaders to determine where funds should go to make the most impact.

"We have to get them into sports programs, evening programs, midnight basketball programs, tutoring programs job training programs, but you need to get them off the streets and offer them some hope."

Cuomo says also expect police and local leaders to work closely with the city school district.

"Making sure the police are working closely with the school system is very important. The police have enough resources," explained Cuomo, "and we have enough social service support groups to offer an alternative."

Making it clear that this 'Syracuse emergency' is not being looked over.
