The father of a Parkland, Florida school shooting victim addressed students in Patchogue Monday night on the issue of gun violence.
The Feb. 14 shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School left 17 students and staff members dead.
About 150 people gathered Monday to hear Fred Guttenberg speak about his teenage daughter, Jaime, who was killed in the mass shooting. Guttenberg, who's originally from East Northport, says his mission is to elect leaders who will fight for sensible gun laws.
"I'm going to fight everywhere in this country to elect people like Perry (Gershon), who want to do something about this issue," Guttenberg said. "This needs to be a mandate issue in this election."
Gershon is a Democratic candidate for New York's 1st Congressional District -- a seat that's currently held by U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Republican.
Gershon says he believes he's the one who will make change happen when it comes to gun laws.
Zeldin fired back Monday night, saying in part, "Perry is proving that understanding 'common sense' is anything but his strong suit."
On Tuesday, a candlelight vigil in Huntington will commemorate the six-month anniversary of the Parkland shooting. It will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Huntington, located at 109 Browns Road.
