U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was questioned by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce Tuesday.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, R-New York, pressed her on issues like the Perkins Loan Program, impact aid for military families, and education in rural communities.

Stefanik asked Secretary DeVos how to give students access to different electives and additional AP courses in rural communities that don't have private or parochial schools.

"I think about students perhaps in this Argyle School may want to pursue an AP course that simply doesn't have enough students to warrant a teacher or it's just impossible to offer. We know that there's probably a very capable and highly qualified instructor that could teach that course to that student remotely or virtually," she said.

Secretary DeVos emphasized a need to think broadly in terms of how to grow student choice without necessarily adding infrastructure.
