Malliotakis Statement on NYPD Detective Shot on Staten Island

January 20, 2022

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Today Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) issued the following statement regarding the NYPD detective who was shot while executing a search warrant on Staten Island, two days after an NYPD officer was shot in the Bronx:

"I am thankful that the detective involved in this morning's shooting on Staten Island is in stable condition and I wish him a full and speedy recovery. It's very alarming that this is the second shooting of an NYPD officer in just two days and quite frankly, we are lucky both are alive. But we can’t rely on mere luck, particularly after our city just concluded 2021 with the highest murder rate in a decade. We need the policies that have led us here to be reversed. Anti-police policies enacted by former Mayor Bill de Blasio and so-called “criminal justice reforms” adopted in Albany have only emboldened criminals to act, particularly at a time when we've seen a 115% increase in ambush attacks against law enforcement nationwide.

"The city’s new Administration has an opportunity to immediately reverse course on these dangerous policies that are putting our police, and the public, in harm's way. I urge Mayor Adams and the City Council to restore the funding de Blasio cut from our NYPD, fully reinstate the NYPD's plainclothes unit as promised, give back qualified immunity protection to our officers, and put pressure on Albany to repeal its botched bail law immediately. New Yorkers have spoken loud and clear and they want law and order and public safety restored in our city. Republicans and Democrats must unite to deliver it, and, acknowledging that certain policies put in place have led us to where we are is the first step."
