WATERVLIET, N.Y. — The City of Watervliet in conjunction with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, in partnership with the Cohoes, Menands, Green Island, and Colonie Police Departments, will host a gun buyback event in an effort to reduce the number of firearms in our communities.

“Instances of gun violence are on the rise across the country. Innocent people become victims for nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Watervliet Mayor Charles Patricelli said. “In the past few months, our police department has made several gun arrests which has reduced the number of firearms in our community. We commend our police officers and all our neighboring agencies for their outstanding work, but they cannot do it alone. I approached the Attorney General’s Office, along with our neighboring agencies for assistance and everyone agreed to provide support. All of us working together can make a difference.”

The buyback, event will be held Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Watervliet Dome, located at 1300 2nd Ave. (corner of 13th Street and Second Avenue). The event is open to the public for any community. This is an amnesty program/buyback. As a result, NO questions will be asked regarding the details surrounding the possession of the firearm.

Those who choose to turn in a firearm will be compensated with gift cards as follows:

Type of Weapon                                                        Amount of Gift Card

Assault Rifle                                                                           $250

Handgun                                                                                 $150

Rifle or Shotgun                                                                     $75

Non-working or antique guns                                                 $25

To protect the safety of our participants and law enforcement officers, please pack unloaded gun(s) in a box, plastic, or paper bag and transport them in the trunk of your vehicle until you arrive at the event location. Authorized gun dealers and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible for this program.

The City of Watervliet is grateful to Attorney General Letitia James and her staff, along with Mayor Meg Grenier of Menands, Mayor Ellen McNulty of Green Island, Town of Colonie Supervisor Paula Mahan, Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler, and the many surrounding law enforcement agencies for their participation.
