ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — State Attorney General Letitia James has launched a probe into several baby food manufacturers because of reports of high levels of toxic metals found in infant rice cereal products.

James has requested information from the companies that make Gerber, Beech-Nut, Earth’s Best Organic, and HappyBABY brands to examine whether the rice cereal products sold in New York contain arsenic at levels exceeding the legal maximum under the law.

The request for information also covers the companies’ practices, policies, and standards for testing for inorganic arsenic.

James is also renewing her call to the FDA to adopt protective federal standards for all baby food to be tested for toxic metals instead of testing just the individual ingredients.
