Malliotakis Calls for Resignation of Columbia University President Nemat Shafik

April 22, 2024

(NEW YORK, NY) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today released the following statement reiterating her calls from yesterday for the resignation of Columbia University President Nemat Shafik over the University's handling of antisemitic protests that have occurred on campus:

"Columbia University moving to virtual learning today out of safety concerns for students and faculty only further proves that President Shafik is unable to stop the antisemitic activity on her campus and keep her students safe," Malliotakis said. "The gross antisemitism being displayed against Jewish students at Columbia University is horrific, unacceptable and the reason I introduced legislation to strip federal funding from colleges that blatantly allow antisemitism and fail to hold those responsible accountable. Universities have a responsibility to protect their students from discrimination, harassment and violence. President Shafik has failed to do this and should immediately resign."

Malliotakis is a member of the bipartisan House-Knesset Parliamentary Friendship Group, and has voted for and cosponsored several pieces of legislation to provide critical military assistance to Israel, restore maximum pressure on Iran, and secure federal security grants for the local jewish community. Malliotakis has also introduced legislation to combat rising antisemitism on college campuses, including the CAMPUS Act that would prohibit federal funding from going to institutions of higher education that provide funding, tuition assistance, support, or a platform to an organization that engages in antisemitic behavior or fails to hold a faculty member who promotes antisemitism accountable, and the 'No Visas for Antisemitic Students Act' that would revoke student visas of foreign students in the United States who engage in antisemitic behavior.
