Albany, N.Y. — The New York State Senate has passed a bill banning undetectable guns, such as those made with 3-D printers.

The Senate approved the legislation earlier this morning. The Assembly is likely to pass the measure soon, according to the Times Union in Albany.

It would then go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

The state’s latest gun control law comes after a flurry of gun bills passed the Legislature earlier this year. They included a ban on bump stocks, a measure extending the waiting period for background checks and a red flag law that would allow a court to temporarily bar someone from buying or possessing a gun if they’re judged a threat to themselves or others.

The bill passed today makes it illegal for someone to possess, manufacture, sell or transport firearms that cannot be detected by an X-ray machine, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. The law would apply to any undetectable firearm, rifle or shotgun.

Supporters said the new law would save lives.

"Our country is under assault from gun violence and there is a flood of firearms hitting our streets," Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said in a statement, according to the D&C. "Banning undetectable guns should be a non-controversial priority for all elected officials, yet it took the new Senate Democratic majority to finally bring this legislation to the floor for a vote."

Critics note that federal law already prohibits undetectable plastic guns and argue that criminals have easier ways to get firearms than manufacturing them with a costly 3-D printer, according to the Times Union.

Democrats bought into lies and misinformation put out by gun control supporters, Tom King of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association said in March, according to the Times Union.

“They’re just throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks,” King said.
