Cuomo endorses Letitia James for Attorney General

Public Advocate Letitia James got a major boost in her bid for attorney general on Tuesday when Gov. Andrew Cuomo endorsed her — a day before state Democrats were to select their nominee.

Cuomo’s move all but assured James would become the nominee.

The news came as the Legislature appointed Barbara Underwood as interim AG, the first woman to hold the post, in a rare joint legislative session.

She will serve through the end of the year.

The AG’s post opened after Eric Schneiderman resigned in disgrace over reports that he abused four women.

Cuomo praised James, a strong progressive who will essentially become his running mate as he fends off a primary challenge from actress Cynthia Nixon.

“Public Advocate Tish James has dedicated her career to fighting for justice, defending the rights of New Yorkers, and serving as a voice for the voiceless,” Cuomo said.

“She is a talented lawyer and a powerful advocate, and as attorney general, she will champion our progressive values and fight back against Donald Trump and the ultra right wing Republicans’ divisive, hateful agenda.”

Other Democrats vying for the AG’s spot include former gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout and Leecia Eve, a former top aide to Hillary Clinton and Cuomo. The announced contenders on the GOP side are corporate lawyers Manny Alicandro and Keith Wofford.

Underwood will fill the role until a permanent replacement is sworn in next year following November’s election.
