New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sits at his desk in his office in New York in February.

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says that 41 state attorneys general have launched an investigation into manufacturers and distributors of prescription opioid drugs.

The attorneys general has served subpoenas to Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Endo International, Allergan, and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.

They have also demanded documents from AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health, and McKesson.

“Our subpoenas and letters seek to uncover whether or not there was deception involved: if manufacturers misled doctors and patients about the efficacy and addictive power of these drugs. We’ll examine their marketing practices both to the medical community and the public.”

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen says the unified investigation is a significant step in the response to the opioid crisis.
