Report: Bill de Blasio is putting out feelers for a 2020 presidential campaign
August 13, 2017
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) is considering throwing his hat in the ring for the 2020 presidential election, the New York Post's Page Six reported.
De Blasio's strategy will focus on convincing progressives he is the best person to run for the seat. Age will be a vital talking point for the 56-year-old New York City mayor, who will argue Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), 75, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), 68, are too old to seek the White House.
“He thinks he’s the inheritor of the Warren and Sanders legacy,” a Democratic power broker told the Post, “but no one told Warren and Sanders they were dead.”
Once de Blasio throws his name in the ring, things will become heated in New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman are all considering running against President Donald Trump in 2020.
“He thinks he’s going to coast to re-election victory,” a Democratic insider told the Post. “His people are sending out overtures asking where he should go next and whom he should meet on a national level.”
According to a source with working knowledge of Democratic politics, de Blasio has thrown all his eggs in one basket by focusing on a potential presidential run. He has gone out of his way to please his high-dollar donors, which is why he was in Germany protesting the G20 Summit.
“That’s why, instead of staying in the city to comfort the children of assassinated police officer Miosotis Familia, he jetted to Germany to join the anti-Trump rioters who were smashing store windows," the source told the Post.
