Democrats block bill allowing movie theaters to sell booze

Assembly Democrats are blocking a Cuomo-backed bill that would allow booze to be sold in movie theaters.

Speaker Carl Heastie, D-Bronx, said that his members don’t think it’s a good idea to mix alcohol and films.

“We want people to be able to take children to a movie theater and not have to worry about the sobriety of people next to them in the movie theater,” he said.

Gov. Cuomo proposed the plan earlier this year and some lawmakers proposed amendments giving localities a choice of whether or not to allow it.

Heastie said this week that wasn’t enough. Proponents are making a last-ditch attempt but they are running out of time to convince the speaker to make the bill a law this year.
